Dear Old Tech

Hello everyone,

Today’s moment about is going to take a moment to discuss what exactly the tech in a moment about tech is.  The tech is a reference CIT, or Carnegie Institute of Technology which is the original form of Carnegie Mellon University and is still the name referring to the engineering college.  With that explained, we can move into actual business.

All the articles, links, and other information after the jump!

Keeping it close to home I have noticed quite a few articles popping out the woodwork noting my dear Alma mater.  The most notable of which is an announcement made today concerning CMU’s energy program.  CMU was recognized for being one of the top 10 green power purchasing partners in the country by the EPA.  This isn’t really a new occurrence however since back in 2001 CMU was the largest purchaser of wind energy in the U.S.  Also, I would like to note that many utilities offer the ability to opt into green powered electricity, these programs have a mixed track record however you really should check with your utility about options because these programs are valuable for determining market interest in greener tech and also in funding construction and research for new energy projects.  Seriously though, having coal fueled electricity generation be the majority of our power generation for the next 20+ years is a bad choice.  Check out CMU and the other EPA award winners at EPA Awards Listing.

The other article worth noting is Google’s self-driving vehicle.  Now, anyone who actually has been following the DARPA challenges(see above image) shouldn’t be surprised that this technology is finally becoming more common.   The team working for Google actually has a lot of the team members that worked on the CMU DARPA vehicles and a lot of similar technology has been ported over to Google’s small fleet of vehicles.  It will be interesting to watch and see how the Government begins to respond to these new semi-autonomous styles vehicles.  Hopefully we will begin seeing handicapped or impaired individuals begin to seek greater amounts of freedom and greater roles in our society.  Check out the CMU story or look at the bigger Google car story.

Also since there were so many post about flying cars for some reason, I have decided to include a link to DARPA's next grand scheme...

Finally I am going to try to make a normal occurrence in this blog, the inclusion of a not new but cool story.  Today’s cool read for those of us that love elegant solutions to strange problems can be found at
or a video at

As always, keep the moment positive!(And I even promise the next won't just be about CMU!)

  30. Self driving cars were invented, but they were too safe, the driver/passenger/w/e had no enjoyability while being in an automatic car, so they got rid of them i think. Was on top gear!
